Shortly after taking office, Sheriff Evinger recognized that rural patrol services could be enhanced by cross training deputies who routinely are assigned to other duties in the rural areas of Klamath County. Historically, deputies funded by the Oregon State Marine Board to provide water patrol were not trained or certified to handle crimes. Sheriff Evinger cross trained all deputies including USFS / BLM contract deputies in order to allow all deputies to handle any call for service within the rural areas.
This concept has greatly enhanced service to the citizens within the rural areas of Klamath County. Citizens now realize a much prompter response for service and contracting agencies actually receive more patrol time to their agreements.
The team is comprised of Resident Deputies who reside in the rural areas and are community members themselves; Marine Deputies who patrol the 28 waterways of the County; USFS / BLM contract deputies who patrol federal lands pursuant to an agreement with the federal agencies; and Traffic Unit deputies who concentrate on traffic safety across the County. All team members receive training that enables them to perform one and others duties.
