RE:

Press Release for Immediate Distribution     Green Dot scam PSA

It has come to the attention of the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office the “Green Dot” IRS scam is back. How the scam works, someone will call you and tell you they are a Special Investigator from the IRS. Next they say you are behind on your taxes and if you do not pay immediately you will go to jail the next day. They will then direct you to purchase a Green Dot reloading pack. (Green Dot is a prepaid debit card.) They will call the Green Dot a “tax voucher”. After you purchase the Green Dot reloading pack they will ask for the account numbers on the back of the card. Once you purchase the Green Dot reloading pack the cards are activated and can be loaded on to another card. We have been in contact with the IRS. The IRS said they do not ask people to purchase prepaid cards and if you are behind on your taxes you will receive correspondents in the mail from them. Furthermore the IRS said not to give anyone money over the phone and if you have any question regarding if you owe back taxes or not to contact them. The man in this particular Green Dot scam is calling himself Special Agent John Marshall, from the Los Angeles branch and is calling from phone number (213) 928-5465. If you have any questions regarding this matter please contact the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office.
